Mega-event offered a highly diverse programme and lots of join-in actvities: The second round of Logistics Day organised by VIA BREMEN, the port and logistics marketing association, met with an enthusiastic reception from career beginners and specialists alike. Around 3000 visitors made their way to the BLG Forum in Bremen’s Überseestadt district to attend the event, which was staged in cooperation with the harbour museum Speicher XI and entitled “More than just a job and career – logistics makes it possible” held on 18 April 2013. Would-be logistics employees could learn about the highly diverse occupations in the logistics sector from more than 60 exhibitors, in more than a dozen lectures and by taking part in numerous hands-on activities. Patron Martin Günthner, Senator for Economic Affairs, Labour and Ports of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen also launched the new logistics job and career portal www. logistikjobs-bremen.com for the region of Bremen/Bremerhaven.

On the track of logistics: presentations, exhibitors, activities

Melf Grantz, Mayor of Bremerhaven, who joined the Senator to open the free job fair, stressed: “Logistics in the Federal Land of Bremen is a growth industry. Youngsters are well advised to seize these opportunities. Logistics Day provides an ideal platform for obtaining information about the different options.” The event, which was sponsored by logistics companies from Bremerhaven and Bremen, offered a wide variety, ranging from practice-focussed presentations by well-known players such as the ACOS Group, Schenker Deutschland and Mercedes Benz, right through to a huge selection of different exhibitors. They covered the whole range of occupations in this sector and informed visitors about basic and advanced vocational training options. There were also a number of hands-on logistics activities: at LogDynamics/BIBA, for instance, a model vehicle allowed visitors to follow the complex system of remote-controlled freight allocation at the terminal. Bremen’s local transport company presented a truck simulator which gave visitors the chance to experience how it felt to steer and reverse a truck and trailer combination. The driverless vehicle presented by all in one and OFFIS Institute for Information Technology provided a taste of the future. Thanks to an intelligent steering system and sensors, this robot scooter, which can travel at speeds of up to 40 km/h, will be used for in-house transports in future. A logistics prize competition gave the mostly young logistics newcomers the opportunity to experience the different occupations along the logistics chain in an entertaining way.

There was also plenty happening on the open-air area in front of the BLG Forum. Visitors could take a look at the inside of the driver’s cab of a modern freight train locomotive at Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe (EVB) Elbe-Weser, for instance, or admire the spacious cab of an ACOS truck. The youngsters could also experience the manoeuvrability of a Segway or take to the skies in a crane operator’s cabin.

Logistics moves everyone – celebrities at VIA BREMEN

The finalists of the Logistics Song Contest, initiated by the ACOS Group and organised in cooperation with the radio station Hit Radio Antenne and the Kreiszeitung media group, provided excellent entertainment. The jury included well-known singer Julia Neigel. Marco Bode, one-time player for SV Werder Bremen and now a member of the club’s supervisory board, gave an impressive demonstration of his strategic skills, playing simultaneous chess matches with 10 teams. Finally, in addition to District Councillor Cord Bockhop from Diepholz Rural District, Bremen’s Senator for Education Eva Quante-Brandt stressed the importance of the VIA BREMEN event for recruiting young logistics talent and strengthening this sector: “Vocational education and training, first and foremost in the logistics sector, plays a prominent role in Bremen, largely thanks to the successful cooperation between business enterprises, universities and schools.”

New logistics job portal for the region

As from now, anyone who catches the logistics fever at the job fair can easily access further information about this sector: the new logistics job and career portal for the region of Bremen/Bremerhaven (www.logistikjobs-bremen.com) provides answers to many questions about the world of logistics, which offers job opportunities for all qualifications. In addition to a job portal for trainees, qualified logistics employees and executives, it also contains vivid profiles of the different occupations in the logistics business and provides useful information about vocational education and training as well as degree courses in logistics.

This was the sixth time that BVL, the German Logistics Federation, had organised a nationwide “Logistics Day”, giving the general public the opportunity to gain first-hand information about the logistics business.
